Just Ask Ann Article

Dear Ann,

My Dad passed away four years ago and willed the five of us kids his house. We paid it off and the courts determined it was worth $210,000. Now, the house is only worth $168,000 and one of the siblings is considering buying out the rest of us. A title company told us that we will all receive a 1099. We believe we paid inheritance tax four years ago. Why would we receive a 1099? Is it really income? It appears to me that this is a capital loss. Help!

Sis,

Last month, this letter and her heartfelt words replaced the usual ‘wine of the month’ or newest cool item in her store.
